This November, in recognition of Children’s Grief Awareness Month, Alive’s Grief Center is joining the National Alliance for Children’s Grief (NACG) to launch the annual Flip the Script Campaign.
Created by NACG with support from nationally recognized bereavement centers, this initiative raises awareness and provides education about childhood bereavement. This campaign aims to flip the script during Children’s Grief Awareness Month on understanding and supporting grieving children and teens.
Grief in young people is often unseen or misunderstood. Well-meaning adults may avoid talking about death or minimize a child’s feelings. They might use phrases like “you’ll be okay” or “time heals all wounds.” These responses, though intended to comfort, can leave children feeling isolated.
The Flip the Script Campaign helps families, schools, and communities offer better care and support by increasing awareness and education.
According to the JAG Institute’s 2025 Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model Report, 1 in 11 children in the U.S.—about 6.5 million—will experience the death of a parent or sibling by age 18. In Tennessee, the need is even greater. The state ranks 5th in the nation for childhood bereavement meaning that 1 in 8 children in our state will face such a loss.
This higher rate highlights the urgent need for accessible grief support and education across Tennessee.
Throughout November, Alive will share resources, stories, and information to help families, schools, faith communities, and professionals respond to grief with empathy.
By building awareness, the Flip the Script Campaign works toward a future where no child grieves alone.
