Chaplain blesses patients, colleagues with her loving care

Alive-Hosp-Chaplain-and-Babara_0137.jpgWhen she was a little girl, Khette Cox’s mother asked her what she wanted to do when she grew up. “Sit and talk with people,” was her answer. Today, Khette is an Alive Hospice chaplain who does exactly what she set out to do. She talks with people – people with life-limiting conditions and their families, people who need loving care from an equally loving person to help them make the journey.

She has walked this journey side by side with Alive Hospice patients since 2008, and we can say without hesitation that they have been blessed by their chaplain. (Though, truth be told, Khette would be quick to say that she is the one who has been blessed.)

Khette was named Alive Hospice’s 2016 recipient of the Linda N. Cummings Employee of the Year Award, the highest honor one of our employees can receive. Khette is Alive Hospice at its best – an outstanding employee who exemplifies the attributes of compassion, competence, professionalism and a zest for life in her everyday encounters with patients, family members, community members and colleagues. These are attributes that Linda Cummings, the first patient served by Alive Hospice, felt were essential to high-quality care.

In our video, “Your Journey, Your Values,” Khette recalled one bedside encounter with a patient that is a testament to the care she provides as a chaplain.

“I remember one patient that I had,” Khette said. “She sat there for a minute and said, ‘How am I going to do this?’” Khette recalled. “I said, ‘I don’t know how you’re going to do this. I don’t know how I’m going to do this. What I do know is that we’ll do it together.”

If you want to understand what Alive Hospice is and what it stands for, the best place to start is by looking at the people who devote themselves to our sacred mission each day. You won’t find a finer example than Chaplain Khette Cox, our 2016 Linda N. Cummings Employee of the Year.
