Love on a Steep Hill

Honoring Hospice Nurses Who Go the Distance

At Alive, nurses are more than caregivers—they are the heart of our mission and the steady hands that bring peace, dignity, and comfort during life’s most vulnerable moments.

As we celebrate Nurse Appreciation Week, we want to take a moment to recognize the extraordinary compassion and commitment our nurses bring to every patient and family they serve.

Recently, a former board member shared a moving story about her father’s final days under Alive’s care. His last moments were filled with country music, tapping toes, shared laughter, and quiet love. But when the time came for him to pass—on a steep, icy hill during a snowstorm—Alive’s nurses did the impossible.

Bonnie, one of our dedicated nurses, made her way to the house despite the dangerous conditions. When her car couldn’t make it up the hill, she climbed the rest of the way on foot. When the funeral home, ambulance, and even emergency vehicles were unable to reach the home, our team found another way. Bonnie made sure the patient and his caregivers were safe, that his passing was peaceful, and that no one had to say goodbye alone.

This is what Alive’s nurses do. They show up. They stay. They love. They lead with heart.

Their compassion, resilience, and willingness to go above and beyond inspire us every day.

This week, and every week, we are proud to celebrate our nurses. Thank you for being the soul of Alive.
