Day of the Dead Celebrates Love

Join us for Alive’s Inaugural Art Exhibit and Celebration on Nov. 1 in a COVID-safe format.

Day of the Dead. If you aren’t familiar with the tradition, it may sound morbid or scary, yet this beautiful Mexican celebration is anything but. The Day of the Dead (El Dia de los Muertos) is a time to remember and celebrate loved ones who have passed. Families build altars using photos of loved ones, flowers, and their favorite foods to feel close to them. Grave sites are cleaned and tended.

This is not a sad, spooky or Halloween style event. It is a sacred community practice to remember individuals and our ongoing love for them. In fact, there is even an element of fun and humor to it all, which you will see in artwork depicting skeletons dancing, drinking, and enjoying “life” as a reminder to us to do the same. Cities around the world are adopting this tradition with parades, art exhibits, and community festivals.

We will follow all safety and social distancing protocols in Nashville to bring you a festive night of celebration, including altars, live music, food, drinks, art-making, memorial activities, a fire pit, and more!
