Inaugural Heart of Hospice Awards Ceremony Takes Place November 5
Alive, the only nonprofit provider of hospice care and end-of-life services for Middle Tennessee, is honoring Middle Tennessee community leaders for their advocacy of end-of-life care and education with Alive Heart of Hospice Awards. The inaugural awards ceremony will take place November 5.
Alive’s mission is to provide loving care for people with life-threatening illnesses, support to their families, and service to the community in a spirit of enriching lives. Thanks to community support, we are able to go above and beyond standard hospice care with special offerings such as financial support for patients, grief counseling for adults and children, free community education, and professional training.
Alive serves nearly 4,000 patients and family members each year and trains and supports a volunteer corps of 400. Approximately 90% of the care we provide takes place in our patients’ homes. We also have two hospice residences staffed by our own doctors and care teams.
“It’s important to us to recognize the leaders who consistently support our mission,” said Keith King, Alive’s senior director of outreach. “This community is our bottom line, and we need committed partners to fulfill our mission and reach all those who can benefit from our care and education. We are honored to have such amazing advocates.”
This year’s Alive Heart of Hospice Award recipients are:
Dr. George T. Brooks Sr., Pastor St. James Missionary Baptist Church
Dr. Brooks is a consistent visitor, lifting the spirits of patients and families in our Nashville and Murfreesboro residences. He never hesitates to visit with parishioners who are under our care.
Lisa Hooker Campbell, Alive Supporter and Advocate
Lisa Hooker Campbell was instrumental in expanding our Henry Hooker Alive Connect program to bring iPads with our custom app to each of our homecare patients so they have 24/7, face-to-face support from their care team.
Barbara Kaye, Alive Volunteer
A long-time volunteer at Alive, Barbara Kaye helps greet families at the front desk, provides meals at our residences, helps with special events and bereavement mailings, and is also a donor.
Jan Norby, RN, BSN, Owner and Care Manager, Geriatric Health and Care Management
Jan Norby helps educate families and care providers on the benefits of hospice as well as the fact that earlier admissions help patients, families, and providers.
Jim Shulman, Vice Mayor and Executive Director of the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability
Jim Shulman is a longtime supporter of Alive Hospice who was instrumental in the launch of The Gift Initiative, Alive’s advance care planning program, and in connecting the Alive Institute with agencies focused on aging across the state.
Amanda Waterman, MSN, RN, College of Nursing Clinical Placement Coordinator at Belmont University
Amanda Waterman connected Belmont’s graduate nursing program with Alive for end-of-life care training. Her advocacy also led to our first academic clinical research project in 2018 on stress and coping in hospice care teams.
